Timber Trade Federation
PROFILE

The Timber Trade Federation Of Southern Africa

The Timber Trade Federation was founded in 1956 primarily to lobby the government of the day for increase in import permits for structural Softwood.

With the development of the South African Lumber milling industry and the improvement in the quality of South African grown softwoods the Federation supported the development of standards for the product and later adopted, as its main membership clause, that members must be merchants supplying South African grown softwoods.

During the severe down turn in the market in the 1970’s rapid and wide fluctuation in the prices created chaos in the market place and threatened the existence of some of the mills. The then department of Forestry demanded that the industry put its house in order and the Timber Trade Federation, after the failure of an initiative by the millers, combined with them and the agents to form Timber Marketing Agreement which stabilized the market and enabled growers, millers, agents and merchants to develop a stable market and to assist the home builders to obtain a proper, high quality and safe product at a competitive, market related price.

The Timber Trade Federation continues to look after the affairs of merchants, representing them on the South African Bureau of Standards, with lumber millers and the Government Departments and through these, and other, activities continues to protect the consumer.
